Impacte mediambiental
- Extracció de minerals: els minerals s'extreuen de mines i de pedreres. Les pedreres i les mines a cel obert mouen una gran quantitat de terres, generen grans quantitats de pols i una agressió radical al paisatge.
- Indústria metal·lúrgica: el procés d'obtenció de metalls purs sol ser molt contaminant. Els forns de les indústries metal·lúrgiques emeten gran quantitat de gasos, tot i que són tractats abans que s'emetin a l'atmosfera. Els processos electroquímics consumeixen quantitats molt elevades d'electricitat i van acompanyats de tractaments químics que generen llots residuals molt tòxics i perjudicials per a la flora i la fauna.
- Deixalles: en la nostra societat de consum es generen grans quantitats de residus metàl·lics: envasos, vehicles vells, maquinària de vaixells, etc.
El reciclatge es presenta com una alternativa per reduir l'impacte ambiental, perquè els metalls es poden fondre i conformar infinites vegades. Per això cal:
- Reutilitzar: el material recuperat es classifica en diferents metalls i els seus aliatges i es prepara en bales compactades. Això aconsegueix reduir l'extracció de matèria primera de la natura.
- Recollir: es retiren els productes metàl·lics invisibles i es recupera el metall que contenen.

Mesurar i marcar
És molt important mesurar i marcar amb precisió la peça que es vol tallar en un metall. Fer bé aquestes operacions és la garantia per obtenir un bon resultat. Per mesurar es fa servir el regle metàl·lic d'acer.

Subjectar i doblegar
Les eines per subjectar són iguals que les utilitzades en fusteria: el gat i el cargol de taula. Per donar forma als metalls és molt útil el mall tou. Les alicates universals serveixen per subjectar peces petites i també les podem utilitzar per donar forma als filferros.
